It is unusual for British and Irish cities and towns to have mottoes in
languages other than Latin or French, probably more Latin than French.

They proliferate all over the UK. Most are vacuous platitudes. It's the
simple fact of being in Latin that gives them kudos, like designer jeans.

Football teams love them. Fans have them tattooed on their bodies.
