Maybe someone can explain the notation used:

How did the symbolism for analogies originate? This example shows that
symbolism

north : south :: hot : cold

In written natural language, English, that says
North is to south as hot is to cold. The relationship between north and south
is the same kind of relationship that exists between hot and cold, in that they
are opposites.

How did the punctuation used start?

This is used in mathematics. The single colon represents
ratio, and the double colon equality.

The format in mathematics is called a proportion; but whether in analogies or
in mathematics for expressing proportion, how did the use of the symbols, the
colon and the double colon originate for expressing either proportion or
analogy?

Someone thought they would be kewl symbols for what they wanted to
express. There's no deeper explanation than that.
